Population Crisis

Some Native Breeds Are Vanishing from Pastoral Areas

Purebred Population Declining Year by Year

According to field monitoring, the number of purebred plateau canines in representative areas dropped from about 1,280 in 2018 to about 520 in 2024 — a decline of roughly 59% in six years. Core causes include unregulated crossbreeding, habitat change and insufficient protection records.

Every registration may save a purebred individual.

Unregulated Crossbreeding Is Diluting Native Genes

Without systematic registration, purebred identification and conservation become ever harder: about 62% of surveyed areas have hybrid individuals; many dogs look similar but have unclear pedigrees; unregulated breeding complicates population recovery, and native traits — along with their cultural value — are gradually fading.

Volunteer registration and sampling is the first step of protection.

Growing Stray Population, Mounting Pressure

In 2024, about 3,400 stray individuals were monitored; around 860 of them — the injured, elderly and puppies — need priority rescue, yet only about 210 have been resettled. Rescue, resettlement, sterilization and immunization require sustained volunteer support: base capacity and long-term care are limited, and pastoral patrols and record keeping remain insufficient.

Disease Risks Threaten the Fragile Recovery

Vaccination, medical records and health monitoring must be strengthened: about 18% of monitored individuals carry health risks; about 45% of grassroots areas lack nearby rescue points; vaccination coverage remains low in some remote pastoral areas; and puppies face higher mortality risks in cold seasons.

Volunteers help most directly through patrols, recording, transfers and health-file updates.
